Electric vehicles in Baja California Sur have gone from a curiosity to a growing reality. Mexico's electrified vehicle sales hit 112,313 units in the first seven months of 2026 — up 46.5% year-over-year — and the charging infrastructure on the Baja Peninsula is expanding to match. Here is what EV ownership actually looks like if you live in or are moving to Los Cabos.

Mexico's EV Market in 2026: The Numbers

Mexico's electric vehicle adoption is accelerating faster than most people realize. According to Mexico Business News, electrified vehicles (HEV, PHEV, and BEV combined) reached 12.7% of Mexico's total light-vehicle sales through July 2026. Pure battery-electric sales grew 71% year-over-year.

The charging infrastructure is growing in parallel. Mexico now has over 60,000 charging connections — 4,378 public access points (up 24.6% year-over-year) and 55,224 private installations (up 25.7%). The public charger density is still far below the US, but the private installation boom means that EV owners who charge at home — which is most of them — are well served.

Charging Infrastructure in Los Cabos

Within the Los Cabos municipal area, EV charging is practical for daily driving. Here is what exists:

• Shopping centers: Several Level 2 chargers at malls in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo
• Hotels and resorts: Destination chargers at luxury properties — useful for visitors, and accessible to owners in some cases

• Superchargers: Tesla operates a Supercharger station in Ensenada (6 stalls, up to 150kW, 24/7). Additional fast-charging infrastructure is planned for La Paz and the Corridor

For daily use — commuting between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas (20 miles), running errands, driving to the airport — any modern EV with 250+ miles of range never needs a public charger. You charge at home overnight and start every day at 100%.

Installing a Home Charger in Mexico

A Level 2 (240V) home charger installation in Mexico costs approximately $800–$1,500 USD, including the charger unit and licensed electrician labor. This is notably less than US installation costs of $1,500–$3,000, primarily because labor rates are lower.

What you need: a dedicated 240V circuit from your electrical panel to your garage or carport, a weatherproof charging unit (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, or Wallbox Pulsar Plus all work in Mexico), and a licensed electrician who can certify the installation with CFE (the national electrical utility).

Most modern homes in Los Cabos have sufficient electrical capacity for a Level 2 charger. Older properties may need a panel upgrade ($300–$800) to support the additional 40-amp circuit. Your electrician can assess this in a 30-minute site visit.

The Baja Road Trip in an EV: Real Talk

Driving the full Baja Peninsula from Tijuana to Los Cabos — roughly 1,000 miles — is one of the great road trips in North America. Can you do it in an EV? Yes, but with caveats.

The first stretch from Tijuana to Ensenada (70 miles) is easy — flat highway with the Tesla Supercharger at the endpoint. The challenge begins south of Ensenada, where fast-charging stations thin out dramatically. Between Ensenada and La Paz (approximately 600 miles), you will rely on a combination of destination chargers at hotels, Level 2 chargers at businesses, and careful route planning.

• Air conditioning draws range. In Cabo's summer heat (95–105°F), AC use can reduce range by 15–20%. This matters on long drives but is irrelevant for local use.
